Selecting the Right Hood
There are three major components to an effective kitchen ventilation system: hood canopy, blower system, and ducting. Before proceeding to the selection of the correct kitchen ventilation system, identify your cooking equipment model, including the total element wattage if electric or BTU output if gas. Our hoods will service an electric range with a total of 24,000 watts of output or a gas powered unit with 60,000 BTU capacity.
To properly size a hood canopy, consider the following:
Holding Capacity, Overlap, and Projection
Hoods do not pull or draw, they only collect. Holding capacity is needed to collect cooking vapors so the blower units can exhaust them outside. The liner should project out to the front edge of the front burners in order to capture cooking vapors (Figure 1). As a rule of thumb, the liner should extend past the outside of the elements 3” or past the outside of the range body 2” (Figures 2-4).
For each of our models, the liner should be sized roughly 4-3/8” larger than the cooking surface width, which means the final hood width should be roughly 10” wider than your cooking equipment.
The hood should be hung between 27”- 30” for the appropriate capture of cooking vapors. Hanging a hood higher may result in the hood being less efficient or ineffective. Our graphics show models mounted 28” above cooking units.
Our hoods come standard with a 900 CFM equivalent B200 Dual Blower system (Two Premier Magic Lungs). This will service an electric range with a total of 24,000 watts of output or a gas powered unit with 60,000 BTU capacity.
NEVER restrict the duct size. Our hoods require an 8″ round duct or equivalent (50 square inches). See the tear sheets for specific dimensions that describe openings made for back venting and top venting apertures.
Do not use flexible or corrugated duct. This type of duct will restrict air flow and reduce performance. Only use smooth galvanized metal duct.
Make the duct run as short and as straight as possible with the minimum number of turns required, avoiding sharp angled turns. Use smooth, gradual turns such as adjustable elbows or 45 degree angled turns. Air must not be restricted at the end of duct run. Do not use screen wire or spring loaded doors on wall louvers or roof jacks. Do not terminate the vent into an attic or chimney. The hood must be ducted to the outdoors.
Why do I need a range hood?
The primary purpose of kitchen ventilation is to reduce cooking smells, heat and condensation by extracting them outside. Another important purpose of a range hood is to trap grease to prevent it from being deposited all over your kitchen. They also offer a decorative feature to your kitchen. The hood is placed over your cooktop and can be over an island or attached to a wall, typically in between cabinetry. If you are looking for an island range hood, we can customize one to fit your needs.
What is a Wall Mounted Range Hood?
This type of vent hood is directly affixed to the wall and may have a decorative chimney, or soffit, to line up with the top of your cabinets or to “disappear” into your ceiling. It may have an internal or remote blower, and it may duct straight out the back, be ducted straight up, or up and then horizontally.
How do I choose the correct size range hood?
Ideally, range hood liner is recommended to overlap the cooktop by 3 to 6 inches on either side. For example, if your cooktop size is 30”, the ideal size would be a 36” or 42” hood.
What brand of liner/blower does La Bastille use?
We only use Vent-A-Hood BHPSLD – Premier Magic Lung® Wall Mounted Liner Inserts. These are top of the line inserts. Because the Magic Lung® blower uses centrifugal filtration rather than conventional baffle or mesh filters, the Magic Lung® blower can handle cooking equipment with higher cubic feet per minute (CFM) requirements and can deliver equivalent CFM much more quietly and efficiently than other filtration systems.
At what height do I install the range hood?
We recommend allowing 27-30” between the bottom of hood and your cooking surface. Less than 27” from the cooktop will be too hot, and more than 30” from the cooktop will decrease the efficiency of your hood. Adjust your hood anywhere within the 27-30” range to bring it to the desired eye level. The average height is 28” above the cooking surface.
How do I install the Range Hood? Ducting?
The range hood should be installed by a minimum of two people. If the backsplash area is not finished, it is helpful to temporarily attach a ledger to the wall to support the weight of the hood from the bottom. Locate the structure in the wall behind your hood. You MUST hit structure, and you cannot hang the hood with anchors in drywall. Once you confirm the exact location of the hood, drive cabinet screws through the ¾” backplate into studs that you have located in the wall. You can screw anywhere through the backplate, as long as you are able to attach it firmly and structurally. A minimum of 4 screws is recommended. Once the hood body is secure, you can route the ducting and the insert the liner into the cavity. Our design accommodates top or back ducting. Once the duct is installed, attach the appropriate knockout clamp for the electrical connection. Once the ducting and electrical connections are made, use the pre-drilled holes to attach the liner inside the hood body with the included hardware. Once everything is fastened, attach the stainless trim pieces supplied with your kit to the inside of the liner by snapping them in place. Test to ensure that the fan and the lights are working properly.
What if I don’t see the size I need?
